Gavilan College Fine Arts Gallery presents Roy Hinojosa: These Hands / Estas Manos

Artist Roy Hinojosa holds out his hands, the inspiration of his art.

Born and raised in Gilroy, artist Roy Hinojosa never had things easy. When growing up, he worked with his parents in the fields, planting and picking various crops.

In 2004, he began fighting both cancer and Parkinson’s disease. Though Hinojosa won his battle against cancer, Parkinson’s continues to affect his hands and body with tremors.

After enrolling in a Gavilan College art class in 2007, he began learning the techniques of mural painting. Though Hinojosa is still at times unable to hold a brush or a pencil, through perseverance he has learned to bring walls to life with the vibrant beauty of his murals.

A free exhibit of his painting, titled “Roy Hinojosa: These Hands / Estas Manos” will be on display at the Gavilan College Arts Gallery from Sept. 16 to Nov. 7, 2008. Gallery hours are Mon.-Thurs. 8am-8pm, Friday 8am-2pm. Call 408.846.4974 for more information.
