Two women were attacked in Safeway Foods stores parking lots last week in Morgan Hill. In the two separate incidents, which occurred on March 19, 2009 just before midnight, the women were followed to their cars by a man with a stun gun.
In the first incident, the victim was attacked in her car after exiting Safeway Foods, located at 235 Tennant Station. While seated in her vehicle, an unknown male entered the car through an unlocked rear door. Without saying or demanding anything, the suspect hit the victim with his fist repeatedly, and began using a stun gun on the back of her neck and head several times.
A passerby in another car heard the victim screaming, and drove up next to the vehicle. When the suspect saw the other car, he exited the victim’s vehicle and fled eastbound towards the Cinelux Theaters. The suspect was described by the victim as an white male in his 20s, about 5'10' tall and wearing a dark hat, dark pants and dark shirt. Physical evidence from the incident was recovered and booked at Morgan Hill Police Department.
About 20 minutes later, the Morgan Hill Police Dispatch received a call from a woman who was followed to her vehicle at Safeway Foods, located at 840 East Dunne Avenue. While walking to her car, the victim noticed a male behind her. As she attempted to walk faster, the male began to pursue her on foot.
The victim was able to run and get into her vehicle and lock the car as the suspect reached the driver’s side door and attempted to open it. He did not say or demand anything, and the victim started her vehicle and drove away. When she got home she contacted police and described the suspect as a Hispanic male, in his late 20s to early 30s, 5’10’ tall, weighing approx. 200 lbs. with dark hair, dark eyes and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.
According to the Morgan Hill Police Department, this is the first time they have encountered crimes where suspects followed victims to their vehicles and attacked with stun guns. One of the victims described her attacker to MHPD Officer Zamora, who provided a sketch of the suspect. There are no reports of similar cases by other local law enforcement agencies in the Bay Area.
Citizens are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings when walking to their vehicle during evening hours or in dimly lit areas. Anyone with information regarding these incidents is encouraged to contact Morgan Hill Police Department Detective Beilmann at 408-779-2101.
