Morgan Hill quake exposes new fault

The 4.3 magnitude temblor that rattled South County and the greater Bay Area yesterday morning occurred on a previously unknown fault near Morgan Hill, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The moderate earthquake hit in the hills 11 miles north of Morgan Hill at 10:40am on March 30, 2009, at a depth of 3.9 miles. Experts at the USGS do not believe the morning temblor was a precursor to a larger earthquake.

Morgan Hill residents reported feeling a sudden strong jolt, but personnel at the Morgan Hill Police Department said they had not received any reports of injuries or damage. The earthquake was felt throughout the Bay Area, and as far as San Francisco.

The USGS said that the formerly unmapped fault that produced the earthquake was a branch section off of the Calaveras Fault, itself a splay off of the San Andreas Fault.

The new fault was unknown because the hills east of San Jose are difficult to map, but the USGS does not consider it a major fault.
