  • Morgan Hill quake exposes new fault

    The 4.3 magnitude temblor that rattled South County and the greater Bay Area yesterday morning occurred on a previously unknown fault near Morgan Hill, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.


    The moderate earthquake hit in the hills 11 miles north of Morgan Hill at 10:40am on March 30, 2009, at a depth of 3.9 miles. Experts at the USGS do not believe the morning temblor was a precursor to a larger earthquake.

    Morgan Hill residents reported feeling a sudden strong jolt, but personnel at the Morgan Hill Police Department said they had not received any reports of injuries or damage. The earthquake was felt throughout the Bay Area, and as far as San Francisco.

  • Supermarket stun gun attacks in Morgan Hill

    Two women were attacked in Safeway Foods stores parking lots last week in Morgan Hill. In the two separate incidents, which occurred on March 19, 2009 just before midnight, the women were followed to their cars by a man with a stun gun.

    In the first incident, the victim was attacked in her car after exiting Safeway Foods, located at 235 Tennant Station. While seated in her vehicle, an unknown male entered the car through an unlocked rear door. Without saying or demanding anything, the suspect hit the victim with his fist repeatedly, and began using a stun gun on the back of her neck and head several times.

  • New Morgan Hill Courthouse to finally open

    After four and a half years of construction hiccups, contractor lawsuits and going millions of dollars over budget, the new Morgan Hill Courthouse is scheduled to open on April 6, 2009. The state-of-the-art, two story, six-courtroom courthouse cost approximately $50 million, and was a collaborative effort between the Superior Court of California, the County of Santa Clara and the City of Morgan Hill. The facility is South County’s second attempt at building a court structure. The first $7 million Morgan Hill court building had to be abandoned a decade ago, after a roof leak caused and extensive infestation of deadly mold.

  • Sleazy Riders

    SPECIALIZED Bicycle Components reports that it has seen a surge in counterfeit carbon bike frames mimicking the company's top-of-the-line models circulating on the Internet. Fake framesets being sold under their the Specialized brand have gotten so prevalent that the company believes a Chinese counterfeit factory must be producing the nearly identical replicas.

    One of the top names in bicycles in the United States, the Morgan Hill–based Specialized began seeing an influx of the bogus bikes last year, predominantly sold on websites like eBay and Craigslist.

    Though the company has long been the target of counterfeiters for its apparel and parts, a company spokesman says this is by far the largest and most aggressive operation they have seen.

  • Spree of residential thefts in Morgan Hill

    There have been four residential burglaries in Morgan Hill between Feb. 22 and March 3, 2009. In each of the incidents, the suspects entered through a rear window or door by smashing glass. The suspects stole various items such as computers, Ipods, jewelry and other valuables. The burglaries occurred in the areas of Bluebonnet Way, Sara Jane Lane, Calle Florencia and San Carlos Place.

  • Bank of America Robbed

    The Morgan Hill Bank of America at Vineyard Town Center was robbed yesterday morning by two male suspects. The bank called the Morgan Hill Police Department at 10:37am on Thursday, Feb. 5, reporting that they had been robbed and the suspects had fled the area.

    According to the bank teller, one of the male suspects approached her and handed her a note demanding money, while another male suspect was seen standing at the entrance of the bank. The suspect that approached the teller indicated that he might have a gun by reaching to his side, though no weapons were seen.

  • Gang-Related Stabbing at Strixe Bar

    Two men were injured early Friday morning in a gang-related fight at the parking lot of Strixe Bar in Morgan Hill. The first victim, a 30-year-old male from San Jose, was assaulted while he was sitting in his vehicle in the bar parking lot, located at 650 Tennant Station.

    He was stabbed in the upper chest by an unidentified suspect. The victim sustaining a puncture wound that was later treated at St. Louise Hospital.

  • Man Arrested for Bringing Meth into MHPD

    Joseph Amaral, a 39-year-old narcotics registrant, was arrested at the Morgan Hill Police Department yesterday after two grams of methamphetamine were found in his pocket during his annual drug registration.

    Amaral, who is on active probation for drug charges, traveled to the police department and was met in the lobby by an MHPD employee. He was taken into the department’s booking area to begin the registration process, where he was searched for weapons and paraphernalia.

  • 82-year-old Woman Injured in Attempted Robbery

    There was an attempted strong arm robbery at Marie Callender’s yesterday, where an 82-year-old woman was injured.

    The victim was getting out of her car in the restaurant parking lot at 18599 Sutter Blvd. when an unknown male subject grabbed her purse.

    When victim yelled at the suspect to let go, he began to pull harder. This caused the victim to loose her balance and fall to the ground, fracturing her right wrist.
