• Boxer Guerrero Pulls Out of Fight

  Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (25-1-1, 17 KO's) has withdrawn from his first boxing match of 2010. The IBF Junior lightweight titlist is by his wife's side as she takes on a far more deadly opponent than Michael Katsidis.

  For the last two years Casey Guerrero, 26, has been battling leukemia. She was in remission until early 2009 when the cancer returned. A bone marrow match was found and at the end of January for Casey, who entered the hospital for a transplant. She has remained there for several days fighting infections.

• Boxer Guerrero to fight for IBF belt

  Fresh from a victorious bout at the Shark Tank last Friday night, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero is well on his way to capturing a third world championship.

  Following his eighth round technical knock out against veteran boxer Efren Hinojosa, it was announced that Guerrero’s next fight will be for a IBF belt on Aug. 22 on HBO from Houston. His new opponent is IBF 130-pound titleholder Malcolm Klassen of South African (24-4-2, 15 KOs), who won the title last April.

  Guerrero’s manager Shelly Finkel said that they had been eyeing unbeaten WBO junior lightweight champion Roman Martinez for Guerrero’s next bout, but that Martinez’s demands were “ridiculous.”

  “It was up in the air until a day or so ago,” said Finkel, who officially informed the Guerrero party of the title fight right after his win. “As long as he won he was going to get it. I’m just glad that he was able to get some tough rounds in, he’s been out so long.”

• Gilroy’s Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero Back in the Ring

  Former featherweight champion and Gilroy native Robert Guerrero will be back in the ring on Jan. 24, putting an end to an 11-month dry spell brought on by a contract dispute with his former promoter.Nicknamed “The Ghost,” Guerrero’s come back fight will take place in Los Angeles against veteran fighter Edel Ruiz (31-21-4, 22 knockouts).

  Guerrero (22-1-1, 15 knockouts) left his IBF featherweight title during his absence from fighting to move up a class to 130-pound fights. After a successful battle to break his contract with promoter Dan Goossen, 25-year-old Guerrero is now under a multi-year contract with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.

• Live Oak Football Coach Hopes for A Great Season

  When asked about his team’s biggest weakness, Live Oak head coach Jon Michael Porras responds instantly: “maturity.”

  “Our team needs to find its leaders,” Porras says, “and we need to grow as a family.”

  As the season begins, Live Oak is returning just five starters combined on offense and defense. The majority of the team will be lacking the big-game experience that last year’s team definitely had when they went to the middle-sized school CCS Championship against Riordan.

  It took a lot of heart for Live Oak to even get there. In the final game of the regular season, against Saratoga, the offense staged a rlentless drive in the fourth quarter. Then junior placekicker Jeff Blean kicked an Adam Vinatieri-like field goal with two seconds left on the clock to win.

• Getting Active at CRC

  The Centennial Recreation Center in Morgan Hill has a teen center and computer lab -- great for kids who want to play a game of ping pong with their friends in between homework assignments. They also have an X-Box that teens can use instead of annoying their parents at home by taking up the TV.
