Former featherweight champion and Gilroy native Robert Guerrero will be back in the ring on Jan. 24, putting an end to an 11-month dry spell brought on by a contract dispute with his former promoter. Nicknamed “The Ghost,” Guerrero’s come back fight will take place in Los Angeles against veteran fighter Edel Ruiz (31-21-4, 22 knockouts).
Guerrero (22-1-1, 15 knockouts) left his IBF featherweight title during his absence from fighting to move up a class to 130-pound fights. After a successful battle to break his contract with promoter Dan Goossen, 25-year-old Guerrero is now under a multi-year contract with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.
Being that Ruiz has lost seven out of his past 10 bouts, Guerrero is the favorite to win the fight. His promoters are looking at the fight as more of a chance for the former two-time IBF champ the get his feet wet as a now 130-pound Junior Lightweight division boxer.
