Fresh from a victorious bout at the Shark Tank last Friday night, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero is well on his way to capturing a third world championship. Following his eighth round technical knock out against veteran boxer Efren Hinojosa, it was announced that Guerrero’s next fight will be for a IBF belt on Aug. 22 on HBO from Houston. His new opponent is IBF 130-pound titleholder Malcolm Klassen of South African (24-4-2, 15 KOs), who won the title last April. Guerrero’s manager Shelly Finkel said that they had been eyeing unbeaten WBO junior lightweight champion Roman Martinez for Guerrero’s next bout, but that Martinez’s demands were “ridiculous.” “It was up in the air until a day or so ago,” said Finkel, who officially informed the Guerrero party of the title fight right after his win. “As long as he won he was going to get it. I’m just glad that he was able to get some tough rounds in, he’s been out so long.”

District Attorney Dolores Carr today announced an unprecedented move in prosecuting gang violence in Santa Clara County, charging five people involved in the shooting of 18-year-old Larry Martinez with murder. “We are sending the message today, by prosecuting this case, that our community and our law enforcement agencies do not and will not tolerate gang violence,” Carr said at a press conference in front of the new South County Courthouse in Morgan Hill. “The people of Santa Clara County deserve protection from these menaces. People need to understand that if they choose to become involved in gang violence … they can be expected to be prosecuted by our office.” Carr will be using a rarely-invoked “provocative act” clause in California law to prosecute both the assailants who shot Martinez, as well the three friends who were with him when he was gunned down.

ROBERT GUERRERO'S punches echo off his opponent's protective headgear. The boxer moves with confidence, putting together combinations, sliding and pivoting around the ring, driving his sparring partner back against the ropes. Two steps forward, jab, two steps back. Three steps forward, jab, two steps back. Then a frenzy of lefts and rights, each landing with the deep thump of solid contact. Sprays of sweat pattern the purple canvas around the two men as they duke it out. Punches erupting in his face, Guerrero's opponent slogs witless through the barrage, heading toward the side of the ring to escape the imminent butchery.
